Applicator Health Checklist

As we enter the busy calving season, now is the time to dig out your applicators and check that they are ready to go for calving.

Like any tool it is important to check your applicators are clean and in good working order.

We have compiled a list of handy tips and tricks to keep in mind in the lead up to tagging so that you don’t have any delays.

  1. Check the pins on your applicators
Look out for blunt pins as these can affect the application process for the male tag. If your pins are blunt or damaged, you can replace your pin via the extra pin located in the handle of your applicator. If you have already used the spare pin you can grab replacements from your local rural supplier.

Here is an example of a blunt vs non-blunt pin:

  2. Check the alignment of your tagger to ensure the pin is sitting straight. If the pin is bent, it can scour the male button. This can affect the coupling of your tag and therefore tag retention.
  3. The green Identiplier applicator has a swivel pin. Prior to tagging check that the pin is swiveling freely. A light oil can aid help if the applicator has been sitting unused to make sure the pin is easy to flick out.
  4. Cattle EID Tag Applicators:

Allflex applicators that can be used for the application of EID tags are the green Identiplier, UTT3S and EID Lazamatic
  5. Cattle Visual Tag Applicators:
    Maxi Female Tag - Allflex
UTT3S, Lazamatic and Identiplier Applicators are suitable for the application of visual tags on Cattle and Deer.
  6. Are any Allflex applicators suitable for the application of both visual and EID tags in cattle?
Yes, UTT3S and Identiplier applicators are both suitable. Simply remove the insert for EID so that the button fits snugly.

Don’t forget to put the insert back in the applicator if you need to switch back to applying visual tags.
It can be handy to have two applicators, one with the insert permanently removed to use for EID’s.

Remember that if pins seem blunt or damaged and you have already used the spare located in the arm of your applicator, new pins can be purchased from your local Rural Supplier.  If you’ve had your applicator for many years and it seems a little ‘past it’ then it might be time for an upgrade.
